Here we are already in the middle of the summer and it surely has been a hot one!

The Board of the Museum has been busy since the 2022 Annual Meeting, which was held in late May. For those who were not able to attend, please review the Annual Meeting Recap by clicking HERE.

Following the business portion of the meeting, we honored immediate past President, Mike Slein, for his years of dedicated service, and presented him with a special gift from the membership, inscribed as follows:

As you are aware, in June the Board launched our 2022 Annual Appeal. Our members, once again, have been so very generous and thoughtful in their support of the appeal. I am always so amazed and thankful for the engagement of our members. Please click the below “Donors as of July 31” button to view a list of donors who have made a gift to the appeal thus far. 

As I stated in the Annual Appeal request, I asked that you support our efforts “to revitalize the Interpretive Center and make it a centerpiece to understand the Irish in Newport County.” 

With your support, the Interpretive Center will become a portal to tie in our other offerings, such as the Barney Street Cemetery, our lecture series, points of interest on the walking tours, and the website. To this end, we are in the beginning stages of developing a strategic plan.

We’ve also taken the initial step to engage an architect for a review of the Interpretive Center and are requesting proposals addressing our objectives. As an aside, one architect was, “…..impressed with the extent of your collection and the amount of pertinent display in a relatively small space.” As we progress, we will keep you informed. Without your support we would not be able to undertake these steps forward!

Again, I thank all our donors to the Annual Appeal, which will continue in the months ahead. All of us on the board are so grateful to all our members who remain engaged in our mission and invite you all to join us in looking to the future.

Important Lecture Series News

Most of you are aware of the devastating fire at the Wayfinder Hotel (formerly, the Mainstay), where we’d hosted our lectures since February 2018. The Wayfinder will be out of operation as a hotel and events space for the foreseeable future. We are so grateful that no one was injured in the fire and very thankful to the staff of the Wayfinder for their support of our past events.

We are very pleased to share that the Wyndham Newport Hotel at the Atlantic Resort, in Middletown, just over the border from Newport  —   also home to popular Johnny’s Restaurant  —  will host our lectures starting next month. Wyndham will provide us with plenty of room for future growth in audience size as we look ahead to a series less impacted, hopefully, by Covid.

As always, reservations will be required and a modest fee will be charged for members attending the lecture and reception in person. Details will be mailed to all members of record and shared via e-newsletter and on our Facebook page. We will welcome your reservations at that time.

This is the perfect time to invite your non-member family and friends to attend our talks and become a member! Those who join to attend a lecture are not assessed the $5 per person lecture fee, just pay the 1-year Annual Membership fee of $20 Individual ($30 Family/Household). It’s our “welcome” gift to them. Dear Members,

You may recall that longtime Museum of Newport Irish History member, past Crowley Lecture Series guest speaker, author of more than 40 books and plays, including “The Murder Trial of John Gordon,” and Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame Inductee, Ken Dooley, launched his latest project, the book Dooley Noted, late last year.

This autobiographical tribute to the notable people and events that have shaped Ken’s long and interesting life was introduced during a festive book launch last December at The Beatrice Hotel in Providence, attended by many Museum members and friends.

Dear Members,

We hope you are all enjoying this lovely July 4 holiday weekend!

On July 3, 1878, one of Rhode Island’s most famous Irish-Americans, George M. Cohan, was born in Providence. According to this article from Irish America Magazine, Cohan’s grandparents changed their Gaelic surname, O’Caomhan, to Keohane, then changed it to Cohan when they immigrated to the United States.

Known for his patriotic songs, including “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” a statue honoring Cohan was installed in the summer of 2009 at the corner of Wickenden & Governor Streets in the Fox Point neighborhood, near his birthplace. Fittingly, the Cohan statue is by the same artist, Robert Shure, who sculpted the Rhode Island Irish Famine Memorial.

Thanks to our team of dedicated volunteer docents, the Museum’s Interpretive Center, shown above, is welcoming visitors from near and far for the 2022 Season.

Hours are 12 noon to 5 pm, Thursday through Sunday (closed Mon.-Tues.-Wed.), through the end of October.

Visitors to the Center will learn about Irish immigration to Newport County from the colonial era to the present, and of the many contributions made to our community by individuals of Irish descent. The exhibits and resources include maps, photographs, artwork, models, video, oral histories and artifacts, including some from the construction of nearby Fort Adams, which was built with Irish immigrant labor.

• The Center is located at 648 Lower Thames Street, just south of Narragansett Avenue.
• Free parking is available on the street (resident parking sticker not required until after 6pm).
• Or leave your car and take the free “Hop On, Hop Off” trolley transportation via Bus Route 67, which leaves the 23 Americas Cup Ave. Transportation Center. Get off at Bellevue & Narragansett and walk 2 blocks west to Thames.

Note: Private visits to the Center on alternative days/times and in the off-season may be arranged with adequate lead time to arrange a docent. To inquire, please write to [email protected]

Dear Members,

The Museum’s Interpretive Center reopens for the 2022 Season Friday, May 27.

For the 2022 Season, public hours are 12:00 noon to 5pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (closed Mon-Wed), through the end of October.

Visitors to the Center will learn about Irish immigration to Newport County from the Colonial era to the present and of the many contributions made to our community by individuals of Irish descent. The exhibits include maps, photographs, artwork, models, video, oral histories and artifacts, including some from the construction of nearby Fort Adams, which was built with Irish immigrant labor.

• The Center is located at 648 Lower Thames Street, just south of Narragansett Avenue.
• Free parking is available in the small lot behind the building, accessed via Narragansett Ave., or on the street. Click HERE for map and directions.
• Admission is free for members of the Museum of Newport Irish History and by donation for others.
• For Covid protocols, please check our website home page

Dear Members,

We are pleased to share that for the first time since the spring of 2019 we will be able to hold an in-person Annual Meeting, to which all members are cordially invited. Please “Save the Date” for Sunday, May 22 at 4:00 pm, and plan to join us at Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall in Newport.

Details are being finalized by your board of directors. An invitation will be mailed to all members of record and the information will also be posted on our website “Events” page and shared via e-newsletter. Reservations for the meeting and/or supper will be requested.

As in past years, the Annual Meeting will commence with a business meeting, which will be followed by a social, including supper and entertainment.

Please read on for an update on the Barney Street Cemetery, including a shout out to our volunteers and photos of their recent handiwork.

We close by extending best wishes for a “Happy Passover” and a “Happy Easter” to members and their families who are observing these important holidays this weekend.

Volunteers Ready the Site for Spring

Many thanks to the below Museum members and friends who came out the afternoon of Tues. April 12 to participate in the first work session of the 2022 Season at the Barney Street Cemetery. Under the leadership of board member and Cemetery Committee Chair, Jack McCormack, the team removed weeds, divided perennial flowers, and spread mulch, which was generously donated by member and longtime “Cemetery Hero,” Patrick Carlisle.

Dear Fellow Members,

It was a pleasure to see so many of you in person at the Wayfinder Hotel and virtually, via Zoom, this past Wednesday evening for Steve Marino’s wonderful lecture regarding Patrick J. Boyle, Newport’s first Irish mayor. Steve’s talk was a most engaging, informative and memorable close to our 20th Annual Michael F. Crowley Lecture Series. We are grateful to Steve for researching the “Life and Times” of P.J. Boyle, to Boyle descendants for joining us, in person and “virtually,” and to BankNewport for its generous gift to support the event. If you missed Steve’s talk, please be sure to view the video, which will be posted shortly on the “Lectures” page of our website.

To close out the 45th Annual Newport Irish Heritage Month, the Museum will host two outdoor events this Sunday, Mar. 27. The 12:30 pm tour of the Barney Street Cemetery and Dancing at the Forty Steps at 3:00 pm were previously announced via U.S. Mail and e-newsletter, and we’re sharing the information again, below. The weather looks favorable for these happenings and we hope many of you can attend.

As a reminder, our Interpretive Center is now closed, but will re-open for the 2022 Season Memorial Day weekend. Also coming up this spring is our Annual Meeting, to which all members will be invited and at which we’ll thank our Center docent volunteers for their service. Dates and details to come.

Tours of the historic Barney Street Cemetery, the final resting place of many of Newport’s early Irish immigrants, will be offered in March on three Sunday afternoons at 12:30 pm. Approximately 30 minutes in length, tours will be hosted by local historian and guide, Steve Marino. No fee, but Reservations are requested.

Nearly 70% of our memberships are Annual Membership (vs. Life), and these are due for renewal at this time of the year. The annual fee for an Individual membership remains $20, and a Family/Household membership $30 (applies to all those living at the same address).

Dear Members,

Just in time for spring, we are excited to announced new self-guided walking tour brochures, now available at our Interpretive Center or by mail. Please read on for the details.

Please also scroll down for important reminders of our upcoming March events, including the 5th and final lecture of our Michael F. Crowley Lectures Series on Wednesday March 23 in person and via Zoom. Reservations are required.

Newport Irish Heritage Month is still in high gear, so we hope you will take advantage of these programs.

Finally, if you missed our last e-newsletter, please click HERE to learn about a lecture and reception opportunity on March 16 at 6pm at Providence College.

We are excited to announce the availability of new self-guided walking tour brochures. Three tours have been developed, each covering a different neighborhood of “Irish Newport,” and each can be walked in approximately an hour to an hour and a half.

• Tour #1 covers 14 places of Irish interest in the “Fifth Ward.” The tour starts and ends at our Interpretive Center at 648 Thames Street.
• Tour #2 starts at 465 Spring Street, “Old Stone House,” now O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, and proceeds north on Spring Street, ending at the Barney Street Cemetery.
• Tour #3 starts at “Hilltop,” now a B&B, at 2 Kay Street, at the intersection of Bellevue Ave. and Touro St. This tour proceeds south along Bellevue Avenue, ending at “Inchiquin” at 719 Bellevue, with 12 points of interest along the way.

Copies of the guides, each of which includes a map, may be picked up during public hours at the Museum’s Interpretive Center, which is open on a number of days during Newport Irish Heritage Month (see below article). The walking tour brochures may also be requested via e-mail at [email protected]. 

A donation of $2 per brochure is requested to offset our development and printing costs.

Payment may be made in person at the Center by cash or check to “MNIH.”

The Museum’s Interpretive Center, which operates seasonally between late-May and the end of October, will be open nine days during March, Newport Irish Heritage Month. Located at

648 Lower Thames Street, just south of Narragansett Avenue, the Center also welcomes private and group tours, by appointment.

The special March 2022 public hours are 12:00–4:00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the first three weekends in March (Fri. Mar. 4 is the first day). The list of days, parking info., map and directions, and covid protocols, may be viewed on the Home page of our website: https://newportirishhistory.org/

Learn about Irish immigration to the Newport area and of the contributions to the community by individuals of Irish descent from the 1600s to the present through various exhibits, including photographs, artifacts and more.

NEW! HISTORIC CEMETERY SITE TOURS

Tours of the historic Barney Street Cemetery, the final resting place of many of Newport’s early Irish immigrants, will be offered in March on three Sunday afternoons at 12:30 pm, weather permitting. The tours of approximately 30 minutes will be given by local historian and guide, Steve Marino. No fee, but Reservations are requested.

When Patrick Boyle became mayor in 1895, many were surprised and few could imagine it was the start of a political career in Newport that would span over twenty years. How did the son of Irish Catholic immigrants, a Democrat in a solidly Republican town, manage this political feat? Join us as we explore the Gilded Age in Newport through the Irish eyes of Patrick J. Boyle.



STEVE MARINO taught history in Connecticut for 35 years and retired to Newport. He has been giving tours at Fort Adams since 2008. He is also on the Board of the Museum of Newport Irish History. Steve holds degrees from Williams College, Brown University, and the Hartford Seminary. This is Steve’s fourth presentation to our membership.

45TH ANNUAL NEWPORT IRISH HERITAGE MONTH

Newport Irish Heritage Month, a month-long celebration of “all things Irish,” was established by the former Newport Irish Heritage Association (NIHA) 45 years ago. Founders included Rick O’Neill, Rick Kelly and the late Paul Crowley. The Museum of Newport Irish History was proud to pick up the reins and continue to compile the March calendar of events of Irish interest when NIHA disbanded several years ago.

The March 2022 Newport Irish Heritage Month calendar includes events submitted by the Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Fort Adams Trust, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Museum of Newport Irish History, WADK, and others.
