NEW! WALKNG TOUR BROCHURES

We are excited to announce the availability of new self-guided walking tour brochures. Three tours have been developed, each covering a different neighborhood of “Irish Newport,” and each can be walked in approximately an hour to an hour and a half.

  • Tour #1 covers 14 places of Irish interest in the “Fifth Ward.” The tour starts and ends at our Interpretive Center at 648 Thames Street.
  • Tour #2 starts at 465 Spring Street, “Old Stone House,” now O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, and proceeds north on Spring Street, ending at the Barney Street Cemetery.
  • Tour #3 starts at “Hilltop,” now a B&B, at 2 Kay Street, at the intersection of Bellevue Ave. and Touro St. This tour proceeds south along Bellevue Avenue, ending at “Inchiquin” at 719 Bellevue, with 12 points of interest along the way.

Copies of the guides, each of which includes a map, may be picked up during public hours at the Museum’s Interpretive Center, which is open on a number of days during Newport Irish Heritage Month (see below article). The walking tour brochures may also be requested via e-mail at newportirishhistory@gmail.com

Boyle.

STEVE MARINO taught history in Connecticut for 35 years and retired to Newport. He has been giving tours at Fort Adams since 2008. He is also on the Board of the Museum of Newport Irish History. 45TH ANNUAL NEWPORT IRISH HERITAGE MONTH

Newport Irish Heritage Month, a month-long celebration of “all things Irish,” was established by the former Newport Irish Heritage Association (NIHA) 45 years ago. Founders included Rick O’Neill, Rick Kelly and the late Paul Crowley. The Museum of Newport Irish History was proud to pick up the reins and continue to compile the March calendar of events of Irish interest when NIHA disbanded several years ago.

The March 2022 Newport Irish Heritage Month calendar includes events submitted by the Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Fort Adams Trust, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Museum of Newport Irish History, WADK, and others.

As you plan your March activities, please check out this online calendar, hosted by the Museum within the “Events” page of our website. Here is a direct link: https://newportirishhistory.org/newport-irish-heritage-month/

Questions, or to submit an event for the calendar, please write to us at NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com with “Irish Heritage Month” in the subject line.

45th Annual Newport Irish Heritage Month is almost here!

February 28, 2022

Dear Fellow Members,

We all look forward to celebrating our proud history and culture during the 45th Annual Newport Irish Heritage Month in March. After the cancellation of most events in March 2020 due to the pandemic, and the pivot to all-virtual in March of 2021, I know you are all eager, as I am, to gather once again. Of course, the highlight for many will be the 66th Annual Parade in Honor of St. Patrick on Saturday, March 12, here in Newport.

There is much in store for you next month, and the Museum is pleased to once again sponsor a full slate of March happenings. You should all have received a flyer in the mail with an overview of our March offerings, a copy of which can be accessed by clicking HERE. A copy of the March 23 Crowley Lecture flyer was mailed separately, and that can be accessed by clicking HERE.

Please read on for a review of each of our happenings, including links to reserve. This information is also available on our website.

I hope to see many of you around town in March, and many of our out-of-area members “virtually,” via Zoom, at the much-anticipated March 23 lecture about Newport’s first Irish mayor, Patrick J. Boyle, by our own local historian and guide, Steve Marino.

New President’s Greeting & Upcoming Happenings

New President’s Greeting & Upcoming Happenings

New President’s Greeting & Upcoming Happenings

February 2, 2022

Dear Fellow Members,

What a pleasure and a privilege it is to be writing you as president of the Museum of Newport Irish History. Please allow me to tell you a bit about my involvement in the organization and share my perspective on its recent history and bright future.

In 2005, I was invited to join the board by our founding president, the late Vince Arnold, and in 2008 I became treasurer following the passing of then-treasurer, Bill Nagle. I have witnessed the Museum grow from a concept to an actual brick and mortar operation, and seen its membership quadruple in size, now with a roster of over 800 individuals from Newport County and well beyond. What a thrilling journey it has been!

I continue to be impressed with our growth and the amazing dedication and generous support of our members and our board, without whom, none of this could have been possible.

Please take a moment to visit the “Board” page of our website so you might “meet” our new treasurer, Carol Lepley, and new vice president, Rick O’Neill, and see the full roster of all officers and other members of the board. These fellow member-volunteers are a wonderful team, and I know they will continue to serve you well.

On behalf of the membership and the board, I express much gratitude to Mike Slein, who took over as president in 2014 after Vince’s passing. Under Mike’s strong and inspiring leadership, the organization achieved tremendous growth in membership, fiscal stability, and a strengthened community presence. He continued Vince’s legacy of instilling the organization, its board and membership, with a strong sense of our mission, to honor the important contributions of the Irish in building Newport and the surrounding communities.

We have all suffered in these unprecedented times, individually and as a community. During these challenging times, the Museum endeavored to maintain contact with the membership and continue to offer you programming of value. We presented our Michael F. Crowley Lectures “virtually,” via Zoom, and continued to offer the virtual option after resuming in-person talks. We safely reopened our Interpretive Center, though on a more limited basis, and offered private tours for members. Our communications via mail, e-newsletter, and Facebook were uninterrupted, and our website, newportirishhistory.org, was redesigned to be a more useful resource. The Barney Street Cemetery continued to be maintained as a site of historic importance and interest, thanks to members’ donation of time and talent.

We are all looking forward to celebrating our heritage during the 45th Annual Newport Irish Heritage Month this March. Hopefully, and with a little bit of “Irish Luck,” I will see you at some of the activities we have planned (please read on for details).

Again, to you, our members, thank you for all your interest and support. I look forward to continuing to build on Mike and the board’s successes and to meeting you all and hearing your ideas for future activities and initiatives. To 2022!

Elizabeth joined the museum from Fordham University, where she taught Irish and Irish-American History and was an Associate Director of the Institute of Irish Studies. She completed her PhD at Fordham, writing about Irish and German immigrants in New York at the turn of the twentieth century. She is a native of Listowel, in Co. Kerry. We warmly welcome Dr. Stack for this, her first lecture for the Museum of Newport Irish History.

St Marys church model
This scale model of St. Mary’s Church is on display at the Museum of Newport Irish History Interpretive Center. The historic church is located at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial Boulevard in Newport.
The beautifully crafted model, which depicts the church at Christmastime, is at least sixty years old. The model was donated to the Museum in 2016 by Saint Mary’s Parish, under the direction of Fr. Kris von Maluski, pastor at that time.
Its maker is unknown, though it is possible the model was crafted in conjunction with the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the church’s dedication (1852-1952). Saint Mary’s is Rhode Island’s oldest Catholic parish, founded in 1828 to serve Newport’s burgeoning Irish immigrant population.

November 22, 2021
Dear Fellow Members.
November is a month of reflections on the past year and of happy anticipation of the holiday season and the fast-approaching New Year.
You will recall that some weeks ago I shared that I will be stepping down from the role of President of the Museum’s Board of Directors after seven very gratifying years of service. While I will be passing the leadership reigns to a colleague, I will remain on the Board and continue to volunteer, including as a Docent at our Interpretive Center. You can be assured of a very smooth transition as the organization moves forward.
Today, I am very pleased to share that your new Board President, effective January 1, 2022, will be my longtime fellow board member and our current Treasurer, Deanna Conheeny. Early in the New Year, Deanna will be back in touch to announce the full slate of Museum officers and board.
Please read on for a number of other announcements, including an invitation to our Interpretive Center Docent-volunteers  — current, past and prospective — to join our Board of Directors on Tues. Dec. 7 for an informal holiday reception at Hibernian Hall in Newport. Please read on for the details and link to RSVP.
With my warmest wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and my gratitude for your continued support of the Museum and its Mission,
Mike

DOOLEY BOOK LAUNCH DEC. 5
Dooley Noted
book cover - Dooley Noted
We offer our warmest congratulations to long-time Museum member, past Crowley Lecture Series guest speaker, author, Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame Inductee and good friend, Ken Dooley on his latest project.
Ken’s new book, Dooley Noted, an autobiographical tribute to the notable people and events that have shaped Ken’s long and interesting life, will be launched on Sunday, December 5 from 1:00- 3:00 p.m. at The Beatrice Hotel, 80 Westminster Street, Providence. All Museum members and friends are invited to attend.
Copies of Ken’s book, published by Heritage Harbor Foundation, will be available for signature and sale at the reception ($24.95), and all proceeds will benefit Rhode Island non-profits. The book may also be purchased online at KenDooley.org by clicking the below button. If you have questions for Ken about the Dec. 5 event or his book, please click the below button to reach him.

“At age ninety, Ken Dooley, noted Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame playwright, author, publisher, political consultant, and raconteur decided, with a nudge from his admirers, to compose a series of brief essays recounting his varied life experiences. His observations, based on first-hand involvement, bear the appropriate title Dooley Noted. His insightful recollections are notable indeed! During his long and eventful career, Ken has encountered the famous and infamous, the literati, scholars, athletes, politicians, clergy, the military, and those who led an ordinary life, except for an extraordinary encounter with Mr. Dooley.”
 — Dr. Patrick T. Conley, Historian Laureate of Rhode Island.

10th ANNIVERSARY MILESTONE: 6,000th VISITOR
2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of our Interpretive Center on Lower Thames Street, shown above.
June 11, 2011 was a much-anticipated opening day, after a number of years of fundraising and planning. We remember that special day as we celebrate another milestone – our 6,000th visitor!
On Sunday, October 24, 2021, while longtime volunteer docents Rosemary and Richard Danforth were on duty, the 5,999 and 6,000 visitors to the Interpretive Center crossed the threshold.
Rosemary and Richard were prepared for the momentous occasion, and presented our 6,000th visitor, Janice Greenwood of Wrentham, Massachusetts, with a certificate and gifts, including homemade Irish soda bread, a bottle of wine, and a complimentary 1-year membership in the Museum. As can be seen in the below photo, Janice and her husband, Mike Kelly, were clearly delighted.
Congratulations and Welcome, Janice!

HISTORIC IRISH CEMETERY UPDATE
As we shared in our September 27 e-newsletter, a new historical informational sign was dedicated at the Barney Street Cemetery on September 18. The sign was made possible through the generosity of the Lepley Family in memory of Museum board member, Steve Lepley. If you missed the article, please click the below green button and take a moment to read this important news and enjoy photos of that day.
We are grateful to the following publications for sharing news of the September 18 dedication with the community at-large:
Newport Daily News, WhatsUpNewp, Newport This Week,
the Rhode Island Catholic.
In other cemetery news, on Thursday, October 28 at 5pm, a team of Museum member-volunteers assembled at the site, under the direction of our Cemetery Committee Chair, Jack McCormack, for a work session focused on eradicating the weeds which have emerged since our last work session. This special place looks pristine once again. Thank you to this month’s volunteers:
Larry Bartley, Mary Ellen Bronson, Christopher Jones, Winkle Kelley,
Ann Arnold May, Bonnie Slein, Mike Slein
Another work session will be scheduled after the trees have shed their leaves, to rake and prepare this beautiful and historic site for the winter. If you are interested in being added to Jack’s distribution list for these volunteer opportunities, please email: NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com

Sept. 18 was a great day for the Irish in Newport!

Mike Slein - resized
September 27, 2021
Dear Fellow Members.
Saturday, September 18 was a glorious late-summer day here in Newport, and the town was bustling with activity, including a boat show and a food and wine festival. With that busy backdrop, the Museum hosted two back-to-back gatherings of great importance. We were delighted to see many of you at one or both gatherings, and we hope those who were not able to attend in person and may not have read the recap in the local media or on Facebook take a few minutes now to catch up on our special news.
Please also read on for a couple important reminders.

HISTORICAL INFORMATIONAL SIGN UNVEILED AT BARNEY STREET CEMETERY
Kyle Lepley Carol Lepley Mike Slein
Kyle Lepley, his mother, Carol Lepley, and Mike Slein (photo by Jennifer Carter)
Museum of Newport Irish History members and friends gathered at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 to celebrate the unveiling of a new historical informational sign at the Barney Street Cemetery, located at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets.
The cemetery is the final resting place of many of Newport’s earliest Irish immigrants. The park-like setting on which it stands was the site of Rhode Island’s first Catholic church and oldest parish, established in 1828, the forerunner of today’s St. Mary’s Church on Spring Street, which was consecrated in 1849 to “The Holy Name of Mary, Our Lady of the Isle.”
Museum board members Mike Slein and Carol Lepley spoke on behalf of the organization to the group of approximately thirty. Board President Slein recounted the story of the site, so central to the history of the early Irish in Newport. He also reminded attendees that the Museum of Newport Irish History restored the cemetery through an agreement with the Diocese of Providence and St. Mary’s Parish. When the restoration was completed, the cemetery was rededicated by the Diocese in March 1999, and the Museum continues to maintain and beautify the site with dedicated volunteers, many of whom were on hand.
The new informational sign was made possible by a generous gift from Carol Lepley and the Lepley Family, given in memory of her husband Steve, a longtime member of the Museum’s board of directors who passed away in December 2017. Carol Lepley memorialized her husband in her comments and spoke of the importance of the cemetery site to the community, her husband, her family, and many members. (click HERE to read Carol’s comments).
After the conclusion of the ceremony, the group reconvened at Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall on Wellington Avenue to continue the celebration and to honor Jack Curran and Peter Martin, two retiring members of the Museum Board of Directors, for their many years of dedicated service.
Museum members, area residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by the Barney Street Cemetery to explore the site, view the new sign and the gravestones, many of which reflect the county and parish in Ireland where the deceased were born. All are also invited to visit the Museum’s Interpretive Center at 648 Lower Thames Street, which is open for the 2021 Season Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m., through October 31, and at other times by appointment.
Please click the below green button to view a nice collection of photos taken at the sign dedication gathering and during the sign’s installation.
Note: You do not need a Facebook account to view the photo album.

RETIRING BOARD MEMBERS, CURRAN & MARTIN, HONORED FOR THEIR YEARS OF SERVICE TO
THE ORGANIZATION
Jack Curran Mike Slein Peter Martin

As shared above, at the conclusion of the September 18 historical informational sign dedication at the Barney Street Cemetery, Museum members, including many members of the Curran and Martin families, reconvened at Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall on Wellington Avenue to continue the celebration and to honor Jack Curran and Peter Martin.
In his comments to the sixty assembled, Board President, Mike Slein, honored Jack and Peter for their many years of dedicated service to the organization and congratulated them for their new status as “Emeritus” board members.
Both men addressed the audience and were presented with a framed plaque, with thanks from the Board of Directors on behalf of the entire membership.
Guests enjoyed the delicious hors d’oeuvres and the traditional Irish music provided by two local musicians, who were joined by one of the guests of honor, Peter Martin, on the harmonica. The cocktail reception, which was orchestrated by board member, Kathy Papp,
ran from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and it was lovely start to a busy and festive late-summer Saturday night in Newport.
Please enjoy these photos from the event. and congratulate Jack and Peter when you see them around town!
